APPEARANCE: Human form and Cat form.
PERSONALITY:
On first impression, Yoruichi comes off as laid-back and confident. And she is certainly both of these things. She's very aware of her strengths and if she ever plays at false modesty, it's only to tease. She knows she's capable, she knows she's smart, she knows she's attractive. Why should she pretend otherwise?
She tends toward an informal and easygoing attitude in everday life. She's quite fond of teasing, mostly for the reactions she gets; the more a person flusters, the better. Despite growing up amidst a lot of pomp and circumstance, she eschews things such as titles as much as possible. They're just something useless and no fun. That said, thanks to her high-class upbringing, she can act the part if need be. She fits in just as easily at a political luncheon as at a fast-food restaurant. Even though the latter is more on the level she prefers to be at.
She can come off as outright lazy at times, to all appearances slacking off and not paying things their due seriousness. But she is of the opinion that too many people take far too many things seriously. Immodest clothing? Who cares? Ridiculous rumours? Hey, those can be funny; hell, she might decide to spice them up a bit herself just for kicks.
Besides, sometimes spreading misinformation is the best way to get things done.
Yep, that's right; Yoruichi is more than a lighthearted tease. When a situation gets serious, that playful demeanour vanishes entirely. She becomes very authoritative, and harshly practical -- downright ruthless, even. Throw someone into danger? That's fine, so long as you've prepared them for it. If one of her charges acts out or needlessly endangers themself, she is not above physical force to get them to listen.
Nor is she above killing when she deems it necessary. No torture, no sadism. Just quick, silent, efficient klls. She has enough decency for that; if she decides someone needs to die, at least they'll go quickly. The assassination is for a goal, not for pleasure.
Yoruichi reads people very well, mentally cataloguing certain behavioural tics when people are trying to conceal something. She's not psychic, and she's not perfect, but she's good at knowing when something is up. And, fond of subterfuge as she is, she tries to elminate her own tells. Again, while not perfect, she is quite good at this as well.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Enhanced speed and sensory awareness. Yoruichi can move with a great deal of speed, on par with that of a cheetah; consequently, her reflexes are also inhumanly quick. Catlike, if you will. In addition to that, her senses of hearing, sight, and smell have reached a near feline level of sensitivity, allowing her to detect things that most might miss.
Shapeshifting. This is a secondary mutation, and she's only able to assume one alternate form: that of a black cat. Her senses become fully feline in this state, but she retains human awareness and the ability to speak. She can hold this shape indefinitely; the effort is in the shift between, not the form itself. She tends to keep this power more of a secret than her enhanced speed and senses, as otherwise it compromises the use of it as a tool for stealth.
AU HISTORY:
There are those who have to scrabble and scrape for everything they get in life. Yoruichi was never one of these people. Born to a wealthy Egyptian diplomat and his wife, she never wanted for anything in her childhood. She lived in the classiest neighbourhoods, had the finest clothes, attended the most prestigious schools. She even had the luxury of travel, with her father's various postings, with the opportunity to learn many languages as a result -- namely Arabic, English, French, and German.
Her fun-loving personality served her well, and she had little trouble making friends wherever she happened to be. Which wasn't to say that her life was always posh and clean-cut. The upper classes bored her by the time she reached her teens, and she would routinely slip away to seedy areas to satisfy her need for adventure. These were especially dangerous places for a young girl with a lot of money, but she quickly learned the ways of the streets; the martial arts training her parents had insisted on as a form of self-defense certainly helped there. It was pretty fun, actually. Far better than stuffy society parties.
Though it was less fun when her parents caught her doing it. Concerned for both her safety and the family's good name, they forbade her from ever going out to such places again. As if that could stop her. What was the best solution to your parents disapproving of what you did? Get better at not getting caught, of course. It was around this time that she discovered her primary mutation.
In contrast to many other youngsters who discovered their ability for the first time, Yoruichi was ecstatic. After all, this just made it that much easier to do what she wanted without consequences. Nothing wrong with that.
In a move that she is to this day proud to say stunned her parents, she did attend university without being badgered into it, and to study biology, no less. Part of it was to have a legitimate excuse to get away from what she felt was the overbearing lifestyle of her family, but the other part was genuine interest. And it was at university that she learned of her secondary mutation, as well as having mutant politics shoved even more into her face. This wasn't something she could ignore any longer.
She kept in touch with various pro-mutant groups -- even a Brotherhood contact or two -- but never officially joined any of them. Her mutations provided her with the perfect skillset to spy on anti-mutant groups and establishments, and she would pass information on to whichever of her contacts she felt could best use it.
This was less and less frequently the Brotherhood when she noticed what extremes their methods got to. Truth be told, she hadn't lost sleep over a few bigots getting what was coming to them -- she'd doled out some of these punishments herself -- but the wider acts of terrorism? Not her scene. She wasn't going to provide for that.
After university, she hadn't had much of a direction to go in. Not that her degree wasn't useful, but most of the jobs it lead to were rather boring. Good thing she had accessed her sizable trust fund before her parents found out about her "terrorist" actions, as they effectively disowned her over those. The money helped cushion things between jobs and her continued stealthy work for the mutant cause.
Which wasn't stealthy enough to escape the notice of Professor Xavier. When he actually offered her a job at the Institute a year ago, she was surprised for one of the few times in her life. Probably more because it was an offer of teaching academics rather than anything relating to powers or her knowledge of the covert. Though she doubted those last two had nothing at all to do with it.
After giving it a bit of thought, she decided to take him up on his offer. Hey, teenagers were fun. And if she didn't like it, she could always just find something else. But for the time being? This was where she'd be.

1ST PERSON SAMPLE:

Okay, maybe I'm not the best at this teaching thing, but honestly, kids? Expected a little more. [Shuffles a stack of papers in her hands, adjusting the glasses perched on her nose. The papers are blank, but you can't see that. And the glasses are fake; she doesn't need them. But it really completes the professorial look, right?]
Or maybe you're borderline flunking on purpose in the hopes of getting some remedial time with your bio teacher? Sorry; I know I'm hot, but I ain't got that kind of time. Might wanna shape up. [Or she might want to get more of a working atmosphere in her classes if she's going to give crazy difficult tests like this. Tomato, tomahto, right?]
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: She likes her cat-naps, okay?
